A key difference between Design and Technology and Art and Design is that Design and Technology enables children to make products that serve a purpose or solve a real life problem. Using creativity, imagination and problem solving, children at Holy Trinity School develop skills in designing and making while considering their own and others’ needs within a variety of stimulating projects. They will make appealing and functional products within each year group which they can actually keep and use afterwards. Our Design and Technology curriculum allows children to draw upon a range of subject knowledge from other disciplines such as maths, science, computing and art in order to enhance their work.
At Holy Trinity School children will use sketchbooks to design and plan their projects prior to making them. These allow children to make changes to plans along the way and look back on ideas in order to evaluate how successful they were and learn from this. Through study and evaluation of past and present design and technology, they will develop a critical understanding of its importance and impact on our everyday lives.
Pupils are encouraged to be resourceful and innovative – all of which will equip them with skills for life beyond primary school. Examples of children’s DT are displayed around the school and tested out during evaluation sessions within each year group – the Year 6 car race is one of many highlights. There are also competition opportunities throughout the year and Artsweek allows for further exploration of this rewarding subject.
